SA State Drill Core Library

5 Tonsley Blvd, Tonsley, South Australia

This $32 MIL facility opened in 2016 showcasing its extensive range of soil-core samples, and also includes laboratories, offices, large open storage spaces and an immersive 3D theatre. BEENGS structural team have undertaken design works for the SA Drill Core Reference Library, within four major stages. These stages are segmented into design loadings, steelwork design, timber designs, and reinforced concrete design.

The design loads computed via AS1170 considered permanent, imposed and wind loads, enabling the translation to ultimate limit strength and serviceability loading. This provided fundamental information for the whole design process of all elements individually. Industry software SPACEGASS was utilised throughout the design project as a method of quantitative analysis.

The steelwork designs include roof braces, roof beams, first floor beams, and columns via AS4100. The timber works (AS1720) were designed for the same elements such as MPG roof bracing, LVL roof beams, and Glulam first floor beam. This allowed BEENGS to optimise the design and provide recommendations to the client regarding material efficiency, capabilities, and properties.

The reinforced concrete design adapts the recently updated AS3600. Our experienced structural team was responsible for outputting an efficient design for one-way slabs, reinforced concrete beams, 300mm x 300mm concrete columns regarding its strength and serviceability. Formal documentation as a drawing was submitted, illustrating all details for construction.
